FIVE LESSONS

Five Lessons from seven churches

Recently I have been reflecting on Jesus’ messages to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3.  Most of the seven churches had admirable qualities but 5 of the 7 needed significant correction in one area or another.  Three major characteristics of the church required by Jesus Christ are identified in the corrections and two are identified in the encouragement given to the churches which did not require correction.  These lessons are instructive to those of us who are responsible for the integrity of the church.

KEEP FIRST LOVE ALIVE:  The church in Ephesus was faithfully carrying out the work of the Lord and holding to orthodox biblical teaching.  But, they lost their first love and were admonished to remember, repent, and do what they did at the beginning.  This is important enough to Jesus that he said he would remove them as a church, if they did not repent.  Loving God supremely is a vital characteristic of the church.

PROTECT BIBLICAL TRUTH:  The church in Pergamum had a number of people in the congregation who believed that an immoral lifestyle and eating food sacrificed to idols could legitimately accompany the Christian faith.  They were instructed to repent.  The church in Thyatira went a step further and allowed a false prophetess to have direct influence in the church leading some to believe an immoral lifestyle and eating food sacrificed to idols was acceptable in the Christian life.  The Lord promised judgment on the false prophetess and those who followed her, if they continued to resist repentance.  Faithfully teaching the whole counsel of God is another vital characteristic of the church.

DEPEND ON GOD:  The church in Sardis received these convicting words “I know your deeds, you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead”.  The church in Laodicea was rebuked with these strong words “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.  I wish you were either one or the other? …You say, I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.  But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.”

The blessing of effective methods and abundant resources can obscure the foundational need for reliance on the Holy Spirit in the life and work of the church.  Falling into this trap will result in a church with a façade of success but lacking in the presence and life of God.  It is in this context Jesus says, “Here I am I stand at the door and knock, if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”  Welcoming the presence of God in the gatherings of the church and persistently relying on God to do what only he can do is yet another vital characteristic of the church.

Two of the churches received commendation, no correction, and encouraging instruction.  From them we note the following two lessons:

DON’T BE AFRAID:  The church in Smyrna received commendation and the following instruction “Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer.”  The words “do not be afraid” have various measures of impact depending on the speaker.  When Jesus says “do not be afraid” it dispels fear because He has overcome the world, he is always with us, and he is at work in each situation.  Don’t be afraid to lavishly love God in a world that resists Christian faith.  Don’t be afraid to teach biblical truth in love in a world that pressures the church to alter its message to suit political correctness.  Don’t be afraid to invite God’s presence into your gatherings though he is an unwelcome guest in the world.

ENTER THE OPEN DOOR:  The church in Philadelphia received commendation and the following encouragement: “See I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.”  In spite of the spiritual darkness of the world around them God was at work in their community and changed the hearts of people as the church went about the business of ministry in partnership with God.  Prayerfully look for the open door God is setting before your church and enter in faith.

RECENT CONNECTIONS

CHRISTMAS:

Merry Christmas!  The Christmas season is a great opportunity for ministry.  For Pastors it is one of the busiest times of the year.  May the Lord grant you energy and his anointing as you encourage the body of Christ and share his good news with those who do not know the Savior.  I pray you will also be encouraged in the Lord as you celebrate his first advent.

RECENT CONNECTIONS:

Sunday, December 1st I visited the early service at Plum Creek Community Church in Castle Rock, CO.  Plum Creek recently occupied their beautiful new facility and are experiencing significant growth.  The building was packed with people and excitement.  God bless you Pastor Doug Miller and your leadership team.  I then visited the second morning service at the Littleton campus of Red Rocks Church.  The house was full and Pastor Shawn Johnson’s message on forgiveness was powerful.  May God continue to use Red Rocks, and Pastor Shawn Johnson and his leadership team to reach and disciple many for Christ.

Friday, December 6th Loretta ministered to a full house of women at Life Church in Salt Lake City, UT at their annual Christmas dinner.  Carrie Ayers leads the women’s ministry in this exciting, life-giving church.  May the Lord continue to bless and use Pastor Jim and Carrie Ayers and Life Church.

Saturday evening, December 7th I had the privilege of sharing with Pastor Marshall and Rebecca Frasier, and the board members and spouses of Chapel of the Plains in Stoneham, CO.  Then Sunday morning I ministered to the congregation.  There seemed to be as many children and young people present as adults.  This is a wonderful church reaching this area of Colorado.  Marshall and Rebecca are a gift from God to this church and surrounding community of people.

Loretta and I spent Saturday night in Fort Morgan, CO in a hotel across the road from The Sanctuary pastored by Gary and Billy Meadows.  They are nearing completion of a very attractive new church building.  The Sanctuary congregation worships in the hotel where we stayed on Sunday mornings till they can occupy their new building.  It was a joy to connect with Gary and Billie that morning and see the people assembling for worship before we left for Stoneham.  I thank God for the growth and life happening in this church.  God bless you Gary and Billie.

Sunday evening, December 15th I was able to attend and participate in the dedication of new facilities for New Life Fellowship in Logan, UT.  Growth in the church has required the development of this much larger facility.  The church building is beautiful and inviting.  Congratulations Pastor Dane and Bev Wead on this important step forward for the kingdom of God in Logan.

It is exciting to see what God is doing throughout Utah and Colorado and Pastoral leadership is critical to the building of his church.

PRAYER NEEDS:

Claire Davis who was shot in the face at the Arapahoe High School shooting in Centennial, CO is the granddaughter of RMD minister Allen and Leona Davis.  Her father was part of the Youth group at Radiant Church several years ago.  She is in a coma and critical condition.  Please pray for Clair and her family.

RECENT CONNECTIONS

Sunday, October 27th I installed T. J. Roberts as the new pastor of The Worship Center at Brighton, CO.  The church was charged with excitement and looking forward to the future.  Welcome T. J. and Jill.  May the Lord bless your ministry in Brighton.

November 1st Loretta and I travelled to Newport Beach, CA for a CEP board meeting followed by the Assemblies of God Executives conference which ran through Wednesday November 6th.  It was tough duty to meet in Newport Beach, but we survived joyously.

Sunday, November 10th I was honored to speak for Pastor T. J. Harris at Mosaic Church in Englewood, CO.  They have two Sunday a.m. services and will soon be adding a Saturday night service to handle the growth they are experiencing.  Compassion ministry is a building block of this church and they are having a great impact on the Englewood area.  God bless you T. J. and Robin!

On Thursday, November 14th I met with Kim Harvey who is a representative for Rural Compassion an arm of Convoy of Hope.  Rural Compassion will come to an area and conduct a low cost seminar for rural church pastors.  Recently our Southeast Section hosted this seminar with excellent results.  Presbyter Don Henderson is a source of information, if you are interested in learning more about this ministry.

Rural Compassion is intent on encouraging rural pastors and equipping them for ministry.  They will also work with individual rural churches in outreach efforts to their community.  Recently, Pastor Chris Russell and Calvary Assembly in Brush, CO partnered with Convoy of Hope in an outreach project to the Brush community.  Convoy of Hope does great work.

Friday, November 15th Loretta and I attended the Sarah’s Home Gala in Colorado Springs, CO.  It was an excellent fund raising event for a strategic ministry to trafficked girls.  Sarah’s Home was birthed in the heart of Peggy Vawter, facilitated by the grant of a church campus by the District Presbytery which was renovated with the help of several churches under the guidance of Sidney Redd, shepherded into reality by board chairman Phil Steiger, and now led by Lincoln Smith the Executive Director.  Thanks to each and every one involved in the creation and sustaining of this important ministry.

Saturday, November 16th we drove to Montrose, CO and met with Pastor Cordell and Erin Hines.  Sunday the 17th I had the privilege of ministering at Olathe AG and participating in a business meeting with the membership following the service.  Cordell Hines will soon celebrate 21 years pastoring in Olathe, CO.  Congratulations Cordell and Erin!

Sunday afternoon we traveled to Grand Junction and joined Bob Cook, Pastor of Victory Life Church and Rex Townsley, Pastor of Still Water Cowboy Church for the ground breaking of the new Cowboy Church property.  About three acres of well-located land in Loma, CO was given to the church for future development.  Still Water Cowboy Church is a PAC of Victory Life Church and is experiencing exciting growth.  Also, Bob and Rex have been instrumental in helping our church in Parachute, CO as they engage in a pastoral search.  God continues to give Rex physical strength in spite of colon cancer and we are praying for complete healing.  God bless you Rex and Debbie as you lead Still Water Cowboy Church forward!

Congratulations to Pastor Doug Miller and Plum Creek Community Church in Castle Rock, CO as they worshipped for the first time in their new building, Sunday, November 17th.  It was an exciting launch at the new site with nearly 2,000 people in attendance!

Tuesday, November 19th we enjoyed a Christmas dinner with our office staff and Departmental Leaders and spouses.  Then Wednesday we conducted our annual calendar planning meeting with Department Leaders.  Good things are in store for 2014.  We are truly blest to work with such a fine group of people.

Have a happy Thanksgiving and a merry Christmas!

AN ENCOURAGING EXAMPLE

On October 19, 2013 Pastor Stan Arias’ physical body was laid to rest.  Stan was 58 years old when he died and spent the last 34 years of his life pastoring World Vision Assembly of God in Vernal, Utah.  When Stan and the congregation renamed their church World Vision AG several years ago I must admit it startled me.  But I came to realize it reflected the vision Stan had to reach Vernal and support missions around the world.  He had a big, joyful heart with a resilient love for people.

Of course, his life was defined by more than his pastoral ministry.  He was a much loved husband, father, and active citizen in his community.  And, by the way, he had one of the sharpest motorcycles I have seen.  In the totality of his life he lived for Christ.  The church sanctuary (I think it seats around 250 people) was packed for his funeral and the outpouring of love and respect from the church, the community, and his pastoral colleagues was clearly evident.

Vernal is a community of 9,089 people according to the 2010 census.  The average church attendance of World Vision AG in 2012 was 130 people which is very significant in a community this size especially when you factor in the Mormon population which comprises 86% of the community. Yet, Stan’s influence reached far beyond the congregation.  He loved his community and spent his pastoral life ministering to Vernal.

Stan grew up in Denver, CO.  Often city people find it difficult to adjust to smaller communities and vice versa.  But God called Stan to Vernal and accompanied that calling with love for the community.  He was known to say he would rather live in Vernal than anywhere else.  Isn’t that just like God; we need not fear his call because he puts the desire in our heart needed to fulfill his plan.

Though Stan’s ministry did not show up in church journals or lead to preaching before massive crowds he faithfully fulfilled the call of God.  That obedience and joyful service in the place of God’s call transcends any human recognition in value to God and his kingdom.  Thank you, Lord, for Stan Arias and may he enjoy the wonder of your fully revealed presence and all the treasurers he laid up in heaven during the course of his life here on earth!

Be encouraged to remain faithful to God’s calling and at the end of life’s journey you will hear Jesus say “Well done, good and faithful servant”.  What could be better than that?

RECENT CONNECTIONS

RECENT CONNECTIONS:

September 27 – October 6 Loretta and I took a road trip through southern Utah to visit with churches and pastors, and then meet with South West Region Superintendents in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Willard and Betty Coleman planted and pastored Richfield Assembly of God in Richfield, UT for the last 35 years.  Willard has been recovering from a serious stroke for the last several months.  After seeing Willard a few days earlier I was able to meet and pray with key leaders of the Richfield church Saturday the 27th.  I thank God for Willard and Betty and the sacrificial work they have done to reach the Richfield area with the good news of Jesus Christ.  Please continue to pray for Willard and the church as they navigate through this season.

On Sunday, September 29th I had the privilege of speaking at New Life Christian Center in St. George, UT and meeting with the board.  Jonathan Holiman is serving as interim pastor while the church seeks a new permanent pastor.  Jonathan serves as Associate Pastor at Westview Christian Center in Cedar City, UT and teaches at the University in Cedar City.  God has given Jonathan great favor with the University and the community.  God bless you Jonathan and Stephanie as you lead the church through this important transition.

Monday, September 30th Loretta and I met with Pastor Jonathan and Lisa Hendren.  Jonathan is the new Pastor at New Beginning Christian Fellowship in Washington, UT (adjacent to St. George).  New Beginning recently joined the Assemblies as a PAC of Westview CC in Cedar City and is making its way to General Council status.  This church is experiencing significant growth.  Welcome to the district Jonathan and Lisa and may God richly anoint your ministry in Washington.

Tuesday, October 1st Loretta and I met with Pastor Jerry and Emma Van Iwaarden.  Jerry pastors Westview Christian Center.  Jerry was instrumental in the adoption of New Beginning Christian Fellowship into the AG and the calling of Jonathan Hendren as pastor.  It is exciting to see how God is using Jerry and Emma in Cedar City and the surrounding area.  Jerry has become a pastor to the entire community of Cedar City.

Then we traveled to Las Vegas for a two and a half day meeting with the South West Region Superintendents.  Dr. George Wood was present and the interaction was enriching and enjoyable.

On our way back to Colorado Springs I had the honor of speaking at New Life AG in Avon, CO for Pastor Dan Matney.  The congregation was delightful and populated by a large percentage of children.  Loretta commented to me that this church has some of the most beautiful children in our district.  God bless you Dan and Belinda as you lead this congregation forward.

October 8-9 we conducted our fall Presbytery meeting.  Among the many decisions made was approval to initiate a District School of Ministry (DSOM).  Randy Popineau, our Secretary/Treasurer is leading the research and planning for the launch of this educational resource.  This school will provide classroom teaching and be an avenue of preparation for ministry for those who cannot attend one of our AG colleges.  It will also provide an opportunity to equip congregants who serve in teaching and leadership roles in the church.  We will be sharing more about this initiative at our sectional tour meetings in February.

October 13-16 Loretta and I enjoyed a short vacation to Branson, MO.  I know, we have reached the age when a trip to Branson (the senior’s tour of the entertainment industry) is appealing.  We had a good time with my brother and sister and their spouses – but I digress.

October 19th I attended the funeral of Pastor Stan Arias in Vernal, UT.  Stan and Karen went to Vernal 34 years ago to pastor what is now called World Vision AG.  This is the only church Stan pastored and he did a great job reaching out to the community and developing a strong congregation.  Along the way they constructed an attractive building and it was packed with people expressing their love and appreciation for Stan.  He had a significant impact on this community of 10,000 people.  Stan is an inspiration to stay faithful in our walk with God and the ministry to which God has called each of us.  May the Lord grant comfort to Karen and Stan’s family.

On the way back to Colorado Springs I joined Loretta in Keystone, CO at the CO WM district retreat.  Loretta spoke Friday night then several workshops were provided on Saturday morning followed by services Saturday night and Sunday morning.  Over 630 ladies were present and it was an enriching time of ministry and encouragement for all who came.  Thanks, Peggy Vawter and leadership team for providing this meaningful event.

Jesus is building His church in Colorado and Utah!  May God abundantly bless you in your place of calling.

PRAISE REPORTS:

Paul Scholtz received word from his Doctor that the cancer has stopped growing and he should have 10 more productive years ahead.

Many came to the aid of victims of the recent flooding in Northern Colorado.  Convoy of Hope came and worked together with Rever AG in Longmont, Pastor Zac Wilkinson and Timberline Church in Fort Collins, Pastor Dary Northrup to provide assistance.  Many from our AG churches in the surrounding areas volunteered time and resources to help under the umbrella of Convoy.  A total of $6,655.84 was given by churches and individuals through the district for flood assistance.  We gave $5,655.84 directly to Convoy of Hope for Colorado flood assistance and $1,000 to Glad Tidings AG in Greeley (Pastor David Meek) to help replace a church van damaged beyond repair in the flooding.  I am grateful our pastors and churches did not suffer significant loss in the flooding.

RECENT CONNECTIONS

Since my last ebulletin Loretta and I had the joy of joining with Austin Bluffs Community Church on August 24th as they honored John and Cheri Pauls for 25 years of pastoral ministry.  Congratulations John and Cheri, and thank you for your persevering and prevailing ministry!  This is a significant achievement for Christ and His Kingdom.

Sunday, August 25th Loretta and I had the privilege of visiting Passionate Life Church in Sheridan, CO.  Pastor Andrew and Dawn Thurber planted this church within the last two years as a PAC of Timberline Church.  The church is growing and doing well.  God bless you Andrew and Dawn as you continue this vital work.

Sunday, September 1st, I was honored to speak at Bridge to Life Church in Canon City, CO as they celebrated their 75th anniversary.  Pastor Larry and Marilyn Kettle planned a service that included songs from years ago and reminders of ministry through the years.  I thank God for this enduring church.  Eternity will reveal the many life-changing results from the ministry of this church.  May God use this church to His glory till Jesus comes.  We appreciate you and your ministry, Larry and Marilyn.

Sunday, September 8th, I spoke at Lakeside Community AG in Sunset, UT for Pastor Lonnie and Pam Campbell on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the church.  Lonnie and Pam planted this church and developed it into a strong healthy church.  Now they are nearing the launch of a PAC in a nearby community.  God bless you Lonnie and Pam.

Sunday evening Loretta and I enjoyed connecting with Pastor Ernie and Lisa Fonseca of Victory Fist AG in Brigham City, UT.  They are a great couple doing the work of God.

Though I was unable to attend I want to extend congratulations to Pastor Charlie and Miranda Stoumbaugh who were married Friday, September 13th.  Charlie pastors Cornerstone Church in Buena Vista, CO and also serves as our Presbyter for the Mountain Section.

Friday, September 20th Loretta and I traveled to UT where Loretta spoke at the District WM UT retreat.  This retreat set a new record attendance and was enriching to all who came.  Thanks Peggy Vawter and WM leadership team for providing this meaningful event.

During the retreat Randy Popineau and I visited Pastor Matt and Candice Roberts Friday evening to take in the ministry of Genesis Project in Ogden, UT.  Their ministry includes a Friday night service designed to reach the lost and three Sunday morning services.  Matt and Candice started Genesis Project 5 years ago as an independent church and then became a PAC of Timberline Church this year.  This church now runs a Dream Center in Ogden which they started in conjunction with Alfred Murillo.

Matt and Candice grew up in Radiant Church in Colorado Springs and have a relationship with the AG through myself, Rod Cowles, and Randy Popineau from their years at Radiant.  The evening ended with Matt introducing me to a couple who have been in the church for one year.  After hearing Matt share his history at Radiant at the end of the service, the husband told Matt he gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized in Radiant Church several years ago while serving in the military in Colorado Springs.  I had to throw that in because it meant so much to me.  Our labor for the Lord is not in vain.

REFECTIONS AND CONNECTIONS

GENERAL COUNCIL:

Having just returned from the General Council I am happy to report excitement in my heart with the Assemblies of God.  Next year the movement will turn 100 years old.  Many organizations at this point in their history are in decline.  In contrast the AG continues to grow each year.  Since 1960 the AG grew 498% in the USA with growth each year over the last 23 years.  The next highest rate of growth since 1960 among major denominations was realized by our friends in the Southern Baptist convention at 66 %.  Most remained static or declined over that period of time.  With a total of 3,095,717 adherents in the USA 40% are under 25 years of age.

The AG is the largest Protestant denomination (we prefer movement) in the world with 66,383,778 adherents worldwide.  Every 25 seconds someone receives Christ through an AG church and every 39 minutes a new church is planted.

I believe contributing factors to the overall growth and vitality of the AG are a continuing commitment to the great commission, humble reliance on God, flexibility in methods, and unwavering commitment to biblical doctrine.  I thank God for every Christ-centered, bible-believing movement and denomination, and God in His providence brought us together in this “tribe”.  May we honor Him with biblical, humble, faithful, Spirit-directed ministries, and God-honoring personal lives.

With all the gospel work going on in the world there are still so many without Christ and so many to equip in the church.  Former AGWM Executive Director Loren Triplett said (I am paraphrasing) “We should not measure our success by what we have accomplished, but rather by what remains to be done.”  The theme of General Council was “Believe”.  The call is to believe God for greater things going forward.  May we receive this call and engage with great faith in the ministries God has assigned to each of us.

Madlyn Tombs, Pastor of New Life Christian Center, Denver, CO was given the “Female Church Planter Award of Excellence” by the Church Multiplication Network at General Council.  Madlyn and New Life Christian Center chartered four churches in the Denver area in 2012 and are poised to plant two more in September of this year.  Congratulations, Madlyn.  We are inspired by your work and appreciate all you are doing for the Lord.  So far, in 2013 we have planted or recognized six new churches in Colorado and Utah.  We thank God for this advance and pray for more.

RECENT CONNECTIONS:

On Saturday August 17th it was my privilege to address many of our teen agers at the East Slope Campus Missionary Conference led by Youth Alive Missionary Forrest Rowell and hosted by Radiant Church in Colorado Springs.  What a remarkable group of young people who are committing themselves to minister to kids on their Middle School and High School campuses.

Sunday, August 18th Loretta and I visited Park Fellowship in Estes Park, CO pastored by James and Ginger Carnell.  The Carnell’s have been in Estes Park for the last 12 years replanting the AG church.  The Carnell’s have done a great job raising up a fine congregation and ministering to the community.

I happened to pick a Sunday when James was resigning from the church as Lead Pastor.  In the providence of God the pastors of the community have asked James to become a city wide Youth Pastor working on behalf of all the churches.  The pastors who are from several denominations are in agreement that this will be a biblical, evangelistic ministry.  James and Ginger have established themselves in the community with an excellent reputation and are poised to reach out to the youth of the community in a united effort with all the churches in Estes Park.

As James shared the vision with the church they responded with enthusiastic support.  Not because he was resigning but because he and his family are staying in the community and engaging in this exciting opportunity to minister to the youth of Estes Park.  The plan is for their Associate Pastor, Steve Ferrante to become the new Lead Pastor and as this is put in place it is accompanied by Steve’s full support of James and Ginger remaining in Estes Park to do Youth ministry for Park Fellowship and the other churches in the community.  I shared with James and the church that this was the most unique, positive, and exciting resignation I have witnessed.  God bless you James and Ginger as you venture into a new thing the Lord is doing in Estes Park.

RECENT CONNECTIONS

My last communication was May 30th and there is much to report.  Normally, we would be sending out a RMDC Connection magazine July 1st.  However, my Administrative Assistant, Susan Cassell experienced a serious bout with pneumonia in May followed by a broken elbow two weeks ago.  Since she puts the magazine together I decided we would skip this issue and return to our normal schedule with the September issue.

CAMPING MINISTRY:  About 1100 teenagers attended the three youth camps in June – a record number.  The camps were exceptional with many committing their lives to Christ and many filled with the Holy Spirit.  Thank you Lee and Renae Terry for your love for students and the ministry you are providing through these camps.

East Slope and West Slope Kids Camps were conducted in June and the Utah Kids Camp is coming up in July.  Camps for Royal Rangers and Girls Ministry are coming up in July, as well.  I pray the Lord will work in the lives of all the kids who participate.

REFLECTIONS:  I know we are all concerned about the decision of the Supreme Court recently with regard to gay marriage.  Dr. George Wood issued an excellent statement on the matter which I believe you received in his email posting.  The day may come when the church in America will be persecuted for not conducting gay marriages or supporting the LGBT agenda.  The meaning of pluralism has been shifting from acceptance of people with differing points of view to requiring support of differing points of view.  In particular, those points of view regarded as politically correct by the popular culture.

The secularization of our culture is leading our nation down a path of relativism in which moral absolutes are being replaced by the whims of fallen human nature.  This is all distressing to us who are accustomed to a culture that revered Judeo-Christian principles.  But, where sin abounds grace does much more abound.  The bible predicts a great falling away in the end times, but it also predicts a simultaneous ingathering of souls into the Kingdom of God.

Maybe I am too optimistic but when sin abounds its fruit is more readily exposed.  Devastation is an avenue to repentance for souls willing to respond to the Holy Spirit drawing them to God.  This is an opportunity to let the light of Jesus Christ shine more brilliantly.  The answer for a lost world is not a culture that provides a wise way of life muting the effects of sin, but rather the realization that Jesus Christ is the answer for time and eternity.

May we stay faithful to God’s Word in our personal lives and public ministries.  May we love all people and share the good news of Jesus Christ without prejudice.  May we faithfully teach God’s people to obey all the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ.  May we be salt and light in a world experiencing deterioration and darkness.

CONNECTIONS:  In my May communication I overlooked my visit with Southwest First Assembly of God and Pastor Jim and Gina Brummett in Lakewood, CO on May 12th.  I want you to know about the exciting things that are happening!  They sold their previous church building and purchased a beautiful office building and some adjoining undeveloped property at 3199 South Wadsworth Blvd. debt free.  They are worshipping in the lower level of the building while renovating the upper level which will be their new worship center.  With the change of location they are experiencing significant new growth and excitement in the church.  God bless you Jim and Gina.

On June the 8th I met with the board of First Assembly of God in Delta, CO and then had the privilege of ministering in their morning worship service on Sunday, June 9th.  The church is in the process of seeking a new Lead Pastor.  Pastor Bobby Wilson is filling in during this key moment in the life of the church.  This is a strong church with a great influence in the Delta area and we pray the Lord will bring the Pastor of His choosing.

On Friday, June 14th it was my honor to speak at James Call’s funeral at Timberline Church in Fort Collins, CO.  James Call is truly a man of God.  His ministry had great impact.  As an example there are at least 50 ministers who are the product of Pastor Call’s ministry.  Thank God for James Call.

Sunday, June 16th I was able to visit Power Invasion Ministries, Pastor Randy and Dawn Scott in Denver, CO.  Randy and Dawn have sustained an effective ministry in Denver for many years.  One of the enduring dynamic features of their ministry has been outreach to destitute people.  God bless you Randy and Dawn!

Thursday night, June 20th Loretta and I visited Steel City Biker Church, Pastor Curtis and Teresa Hubbell in Pueblo, CO.  What a joy to experience this unique ministry.  The gathering consisted of a meal, preaching of the word, prayer, and fellowship.  It reminded me of the gatherings we read about in the book of Acts.  Motorcycles, jeans, leather vests, and doo rags are common in the congregation.  I sold my motorcycle years ago but I do have jeans, and they accepted the non-bikers as freely as bikers.  Curtis continues to minister in the biker culture around the nation in addition to leading the church.  Way to go Curtis and Teresa.

Sunday, June 23rd Loretta and I joined First Assembly of God in Dove Creek, CO, Pastor Buddy and Cecily Bishop for their one year anniversary.  What a joy to share God’s word with this new congregation and several visiting friends totaling about 85 people.  The AG church in Dove Creek was closed several years ago and the Bishops had the vision to plant a new work.  God has been at work in this effort and there is now a flourishing church with excellent leadership in place.  Who knows what the Lord has in store for Buddy and Cecily when they retire again.

June 26th we traveled to Springfield, MO for the District Leadership Conference held in conjunction with Missionary Renewal by AGWM.  Jerry Cassell, our District Missions Director and I had the privilege of participating in the commissioning of Tyler and Rebecca Shults as RMD missionaries to India.  Tyler and Rebecca have been part of the Chi Alpha team at Colorado State University and will be working with University students in India as well as Project Rescue.

Sunday, June 30th I had the privilege of speaking at the Durango Cowboy Church, Pastor Stan and Gail Formby.  Stan and Gail have been pastoring in Durango for many years.  God birthed a new paradigm of ministry in Stan’s heart and last November with the support of the congregation changed the format of ministry to a Cowboy Church.  Stan grew up around the Cowboy culture and fit right in with this direction.  Since making the change in the method of ministry the church has more than doubled in the last 7 months!

Cowboy boots (I wore mine after dusting them off), jeans, western shirts, and Cowboy hats were the normal attire.  The service included western style music, cowboy poetry, coffee around tables filling the sanctuary, and a relaxed interactive atmosphere.  It was exciting and fun to experience the blessing of God with this church.

During the summer on Monday nights Stan conducts horseback riding lessons for children in Durango.  Parents are required to stay with their kids and part of the program is to share one cowboy ethic (which happens to coincide with the ten commandments) each evening.  This has proven to be a very popular program for families in the Durango area.  God bless you Stan and Gail.

Sunday evening and Monday morning, June 30-July 1 Loretta and I joined the kickoff of the West Slope Family Camp at Camp Cedaredge.  Sunday evening the chapel was packed with 450 people worshipping and taking in the preaching of God’s word.  Jason Neely together with other West Slope Pastors lead the camp and it is experiencing revitalization.

PRAYER:  Lowell Anderson passed away yesterday, July 2, 2013 after a long battle with cancer.  Lowell served on the Pastoral staff of Grand Junction First AG many years ago, then managed Camp Cedaredge  for a season, and then pastored in Michigan for several years before moving to Delta, CO to retire.  He will be missed.  The funeral will be Saturday morning, July 6th at Delta First AG.  The time of the funeral has not been set as of this writing.  Please pray for Sandy and their family.

RECENT CONNECTIONS

RECENT CONNECTIONS:

Since my last Ebulletin I have had the privilege of visiting Radiant Church in Colorado Springs for their Saturday night service April 13th.  Radiant is growing and alive with God’s blessing.  God bless Pastor Todd Hudnall and his leadership team.

On Sunday, April 14th Loretta and I joined the Praise Assembly of God congregation in a farewell reception for Pastor Bobby and Alvena Wilson.  Thank God for Bobby and Alvena and their faithful and effective ministry in Pueblo, CO for 45 years.  Bobby remains active in ministry and though he has not asked I mention this I highly recommend him as a guest preacher/teacher.

On Sunday, April 21st I shared in the installation of Steve Chavez as the new Lead Pastor of Praise AG.  God bless you, Steve and Bonnie as you shoulder the leadership of this great church.

The 96th District Council of the Rocky Mountain District convened in Colorado Springs, CO at Radiant Church April 23-24.  We experienced the presence of God, meaningful ministry in the services and workshops, rich fellowship, and productive business sessions.  The services and leadership workshops will be posted on our District website at www.rmdc.org.

The results of various elections are as follows:  Don Steiger was elected Superintendent - Alex Lucero was elected Assistant Superintendent (for the unexpired term) - Dane Wead was elected Utah Regional Executive Presbyter (for the unexpired term) - All Presbyters elected during the Sectional Tour were ratified - The Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent were nominated for the General Council Nonresident Executive Presbytery to be voted upon at General Council - and Jason Neely was nominated for the General Council Executive Presbytery as the under 40 Ordained RMD minister to the General Presbyters who will in turn select four names to be voted upon at General Council.

Sunday, May 12th I was honored to speak to the congregation of Cortez First AG, Cortez, CO.  That evening I chaired a business meeting in which the church was set in order as a General Council church and Ted Britain was elected as Lead Pastor going forward.  Congratulations Ted and La Dell!

May 15th the Utah North Section convened to elect a new Sectional Presbyter since Dane Wead vacated that office when he was elected to the office of Utah Executive Presbyter at District Council.  Under the leadership of Alex Lucero and Dane Wead the section elected Lonnie Campbell to serve as their Presbyter going forward.  Congratulations Dane and Lonnie!

May 17-19 I attended the District Men’s Retreat at Camp Cedaredge.  The Saturday night service was particularly powerful as Neil Kennedy ministered and called men to the altar to deal with bitterness and unforgiveness.  Thank you, Greg Hawkins for your work as District Men’s Director.  Greg is available to consult and encourage Men’s Ministry in our churches.

Saturday night on Memorial Day weekend, May 25th Loretta and I visited Restoration Church in Colorado Springs, CO and received a wonderful message from Associate Pastor Dave Johnston.  A large portion of the Restoration congregation is military people.  Dave Johnston served honorably in the military for many years and God in His providence is using Dave together with Lead Pastor Paul Aragon and the people of Restoration Church to effectively minister to the large military population in the Colorado Springs area.

UNITY and DISTRICT COUNCIL

UNITY:  When pastoring I prayed earnestly for unity in the church.  I learned early on that a church divided is ineffective.  Unity in the church is a powerful principle that provides a healthy atmosphere in which believers can grow in Christ and unbelievers are more inclined to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.  Unity puts the love of God on display through our love for one another and releases the Holy Spirit to draw people to Christ through the church.   “My (Jesus) prayer for them is not for them alone.  I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one. Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.  May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”  (John 17:20-21).

Jesus prayed for unity in the church.  And, his word teaches the following important keys to unity: unity of the faith, unity of the Spirit, unity of purpose, and unity of structure.

Unity of the faith (Eph 4:13) is based on agreement with essential biblical truth.  A qualifier for membership and leadership in the church is agreement with sound biblical doctrine.

Unity of the Spirit (Eph 4:2-3) is based on love and acceptance of one another.  This includes the ability to unite together in spite of differences of opinion in non-essential areas such as personal convictions.

Unity of purpose (Mt 28:19-20) is based on Christ’s plan for the church to disciple people from all nations to Him.  When we establish a vision to achieve that mission it helps to unite the church.

Unity of structure (1 Th 5:12-13) is based on a biblical organization of the church.  The scriptures teach there are those God has called into church leadership and believers are to follow them so long as they lead biblically.

When one or more of these areas are not functioning a church suffers from dissention and loses its ability to effectively carry out the ministry of Jesus Christ.  This is not to say that all attendees of a church will be in accord with these principles.  For example, at any given time there should be unbelievers attending the church who may not agree on biblical truth – not yet.  However, the believers in the church are the ones on whom it is incumbent to live in unity.  When they do so the perpetual evangelistic evolution of unbelievers belonging (being received and loved by the church), then believing, then becoming will be encouraged and not disturb the unity.

Unity in the church should transcend the local congregation and be observed among bible-believing Pastors and churches by the support, respect, and love we display for one another.  This is a worthy goal to advance the kingdom of God on a micro and macro level.

DISTRICT COUNCIL:  The 96th District Council of the Rocky Mountain District convened in Colorado Springs, CO at Radiant Church April 23-24.  We experienced the presence of God, meaningful ministry in the services and workshops, rich fellowship, and productive business sessions.  The services and leadership workshops will be posted on our District website at www.rmdc.org.

SUSTAINING EFFECTIVE MINISTRY

“…stand firm, Let nothing move you.  Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

Fifteen hundred ministers leave the ministry each month in the USA!  This is a startling statistic and reminds us that sustaining effective ministry is a challenge.  There are some who discover that God is directing them into another profession and their departure from the ranks of vocational ministers is understandable and appropriate.  Indeed all believers are ministers, but those who serve as pastors, evangelists, and missionaries are unique in their influence over the church and their visibility as leaders in the Kingdom of God.  This reality is accompanied with its own complexity and makes the occupational minister a target for Satan.  I would like to suggest some ideas that are critical to sustaining effective ministry.

WORK IN THE RIGHT WAY:  This entails WORKING IN THE RIGHT PLACE.  You can only do God’s work by God’s empowering grace and if you are out of His will that empowerment will be missing.  An honest look at what the Spirit is saying, your strengths and weaknesses (natural and spiritual), the input of others in the body of Christ, and the evidence of God’s blessing or lack thereof on what you do helps you determine your sweet spot in ministry.

Also, WORKING WITH THE RIGHT MOTIVES is essential to sustainability.  Righteous motivation starts with your love for God; serving Him and not yourself.  Jesus challenged Peter (John 21:15-23) with the question “do you truly love me?”  When Peter responded, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you” then Jesus said “Feed My lambs”.  His love for the Lord was the foundational motivation for Peter’s ministry.  Righteous motivation then moves to your love for people; a quality gained by the love of God being poured into your heart by the Holy Spirit.  It plays out in a self-sacrificing effort to see the purposes of God achieved in this world.

In a game against the Boston Celtics, Michael Jordan (the great Chicago Bulls basketball player) scored 63 points.  Jordan’s team mate Will Perdue scored two.  After the game Perdue was asked what it is like to play with Michael Jordan.  He replied, “I will never forget this night because Michael and I joined to make 65 points to win the game.”  Perdue exemplified a selfless attitude that made him a valuable contributor to the success of the Chicago Bulls.

Also, in Jesus’ conversation with Peter in John 21 He reveals that Peter will experience a violent death and concludes with the words, “Follow Me.”  Peter saw John nearby and asked “Lord, what about him?”  Jesus answered “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?  You must follow me.”  Jesus was honing Peter’s perspective to a singular focus of obeying Jesus because he loved Him above all else.  Keeping your relationship with God paramount and comparisons with others under control is essential to sustained ministry.

A.W. Tozer said “A true and safe leader has no desire to lead, but is forced into a position by the inward pressure of the Holy Spirit and the press of circumstances.  The man who is ambitious to lead is disqualified as a leader.  The true leader will have no desire to lord it over God’s heritage, but will be humble, gentle, self-sacrificing.”

WORK SMART:  Once you are in God’s will working with righteous motivation then you need to work smart to be effective and sustained.  To work smart you must first of all TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY.  Your first responsibility in ministry is your family.

Second, DON’T WORK ALONE.  You need friends in similar ministry to provide encouragement, counsel, and accountability.  In my first few years pastoring Radiant Church I would drive to Pueblo, CO and meet with Pastor Bobby Wilson to glean from his experience as a pastor and to receive encouragement from one who understood the unique challenges of a Lead Pastor.  His friendship was a sustaining factor in my 22 years of ministry at Radiant Church.

Partnership in ministry also includes delegating work to the body of Christ.  The more you try to do by yourself the less you will get done and the wearier you become.  Equip and release the body of Christ to do the work of the ministry.

Third, DEAL WITH CHANGE EFFECTIVELY.  Jesus established the mission and it does not change, “…go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…” (Matthew 28:19-20).  However, the vision – the way you achieve the mission – must change over time and from one place to another for you to be effective.  Factors that produced success 20 years ago may produce failure today.

A friend who is a venture capitalist shared with me that very few CEOs succeed at more than one company.  After experiencing success in one company they move on to another and try to duplicate what they did before without taking into account the uniqueness of their new assignment.  This lack of flexibility and wisdom leads to failure as they discover a new approach is needed in the new company.  Working smart means prayerfully and studiously shaping the vision to achieve the established mission.

WORK HARD:  The text makes that clear when it says “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord”.  I am not suggesting you become a workaholic.  That is counterproductive.  But, after establishing the right place of service, the right motives, and a smart approach then you must work hard if you hope to accomplish what Jesus called you to do.  A wise balance in a minister’s life will include hard work in the ministry.  This informed hard work produces results and that also becomes a sustaining factor.

WORK IN FAITH:  The results of ministry are sometimes easily measured and sometimes not.  Whether God has called you to a place where the results are immediate or delayed, there is an eternal reward awaiting you for your work in God’s Kingdom.  It is always complicated to talk about success in the ministry because there are seasons of sowing and of reaping.  Jeremiah’s ministry resulted in rejection and hardship, and yet he was obedient to God.  The Apostle Paul’s ministry, though marked by suffering, brought extraordinary results in souls saved and churches established.

You are responsible for the work you do for the Lord; He controls the outcome in time and eternity.  Willing obedience and the quality of your work (“gold, silver, costly stones” 1 Corinthians 3:12) is the measure of success and Jesus will reward His children for their work at the judgment seat of Christ.

A golf commercial says, “Bobby Jones worked on his swing, not his score.  That is how he became the best golfer of his generation.”  Work on your swing and let God take care of the score.

“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.  We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.  We do not want you to become lazy, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.” (Hebrews 6:10-12)

A NEW YEAR

NEWS YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS OR A LIFETIME OF RESOLUTION:

Once again we enter a new year.  I’ve belonged to a gym for 25 years and each January the crowd at the gym increases noticeably as people follow through on new-year’s resolutions to lose weight and get in shape.  After a couple months the crowds decline and the faithful few continue their exercise routines.  I discovered along the way that I achieve more lasting results when I set long term objectives and design a sustainable pace of activity to achieve them.  Trying to go to the gym 3-4 times a week proved to be unsustainable for me.  So, I settled in on a plan to go at least twice a week and throw in two or three long walks (which used to be runs, but that day is past).

A sustainable life-plan can be a valuable tool to keep oneself on track.  If you haven’t already, I recommend you put in writing your life mission statement.  Then shape a sustainable life style to achieve the mission.  Several years ago I wrote a life mission statement which I carry with me and review from time to time.  It has proven to be a valuable tool to help me stay on course.  I rarely share it, but here goes:

It is my mission in life to honor God:

To keep faith in the bible as God’s word, and in Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord.
To nurture my relationship with God and live in vital union with Him.
To love God with all my strength.
To live a holy life, by His help and grace.
To be a man of integrity in every area of life.
To fulfill His purpose for my life.

It is my mission in life to care for my family:

To always be thankful for every member of my family.
To love and enjoy my family.
To help each member to know the Lord and become the best they can be in Him.
To provide an example to follow.
To provide spiritual, emotional, and financial support for my wife Loretta.
To remain faithful to Loretta

It is my mission in life to do God’s will:

To rely on His strength to obey.
To conform my will to His.
To not shrink back from what He calls me to do.
To finish my life well.

It is my mission in life to live in God’s grace:

To not allow my failure or the failure of others to move me away from Him.
To fully trust Him to enable me to be and do what He desires, yet to rest in the assurance of His unconditional love.

It is my mission in life to impart life to others:

To be a giver, not a taker.
To share Jesus Christ effectively to whomever I can.
To reveal the wisdom of following Christ.
To live in the Spirit.

It is my mission in life to co-labor with Christ to build His church:

To love the church.
To work to the benefit of the church, as the Lord directs.

It is my mission in life to live in personal well-being except when God requires otherwise:

To earn income and manage it well.
To faithfully give of my finances.
To maintain good health as much as I can.
To live in right relationships with others.
To experience peace of mind.
To keep learning and growing.
To enjoy life and live it fully.
To live my life without any significant regrets.

It is my mission in life to leave a legacy that will honor God and inspire others to follow Christ:

To hear Jesus say “Well done good and faithful servant” at the end of my life’s journey.

PROGRESS IN 2012 AND LOOKING AHEAD:

I am excited to report that 17 new churches were planted or recognized in the Rocky Mountain District in 2012. Two of the 17 are new District Affiliated churches and 15 are Parent Affiliated Churches; 5 are in Utah and 12 in Colorado.  In addition, one was planted in Colorado in partnership with the RMD by a church in Louisiana.  We also closed two churches giving us a total of 164 churches in Utah and Colorado (165 if you count the church from LA).  Only one other AG district planted more churches in 2012 and they are serving a much larger population.

It is important to keep our mission clear.  Our purpose is to disciple as many people to the Lord Jesus Christ as possible in Colorado and Utah.  Our method is flourishing local churches and outreach ministries.  Our key component is anointed, godly, effective ministers.  And, the foundation on which we build is the Lord Jesus Christ – His person, His work, His truth, His providence, and His empowering Spirit.

There is much we do not know about 2013, but we do know this; God desires that none perish, He is working to draw men and women to Himself, He will build His church, and we are called to participate in His grand cause.  I pray you experience God’s direction and enablement to live His abundant life, and employ His ministry plan uniquely designed for you in the coming year.  I also pray we will all embrace the expansive heart of God to support and release the ministry family He has called so that together we can disciple as many as possible to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

“What, after all is Apollos?  And what is Paul?  Only servants through whom you came to believe – as the Lord has assigned to each his task.  I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow … The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.  For we are God’s fellow workers, you are God’s field, God’s Building.

By the grace God has given to me (Paul), I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it.  But each one should be careful how he builds.  For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  (1 Corinthians 3:5-11).
